Also known as “wall-to-wall” or “broadloom” carpet is a warm and durable flooring option. It is available in a multitude of colors and styles with prices from low to high.

Construction:

The three basic constructions of carpet are:
1. cut pile
2. loop pile
3. cut and loop pile

Fiber Types:

  1. Nylon – durable and resilient, nylon holds up to traffic and is usually treated with topical stain resistant treatments.
  2. Polyester – inherently stain resistant, the new generation of polyesters have stain resistance woven into the fiber. Many are extremely soft and durable.
  3. Polypropylene (olefin) - always an excellent value, polypropylene is known for its stain resistance.
  4. 21st Century Fibers – from plastic beverage bottles recycled into durable carpet fiber, to polyester with great stain resistance with the softest feel you have ever sunk your feet into, carpet technology is getting better and better!

Face Weight:

The number of ounces of carpet fiber per square yard. The higher the face weight – the better the carpet quality.

Density:

Density is how tightly the yarn is stitched into the carpet backing. Higher density affects the look, comfort level and improves resistance to crushing and matting.

Twist:

Twist applies to cut pile carpets. It is the number of times the fiber is twisted in a 1” length. Twist affects look and long-term durability with higher twist being more durable.

Carpet Pad/Cushion:

A key part of your carpet purchase is the pad – the base layer makes all the difference. Pad is measured in thickness and density weight. Rebond and foam are two common pad styles. Waterproof coated pads are superior at keeping liquids from penetrating the pad, guarding against odors and germs and keeping liquids close to the top for easier cleaning.
